As one of only a few cities in southeastern Florida with no metropolitan areas serving it directly (Jacksonville does share this distinction), citizens living in neighboring counties are often required to travel outside their county if they want access to services found within their own municipal limits such as schools or hospitalsites. This has led some people to refer to downtown Destin simply as "downtown": locals know not just what street number their buildings are on but where any given restaurant or store may be located too!
