In 1918, gun dealers conducted a handgun sale at the old Post Office building on Constitution Avenue which was also used as a movie theater. Gun sales continued sporadically through the 1930s until 1938 when they stopped due to prohibition. In 1939, gun dealers re-opened under new ownership and conducted handgun sales again until 1947 when prohibition was repealed. From then on handguns were only available through licensed firearm dealers or by mail order from other states with similar laws. From 1948-1952, handgun sales were conducted at two locations – the old post office building on Constitution Avenue which was also used as an auto dealership and later for furniture stores; and an outdoor Shooting Range located off US Highway 1 south of town near Interstate 4 (US Hwy 1 & US Hwy 82). Destin, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Bay County, Florida. The population was 1,531 as of the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,295. It is situated on the mouth of the bay which forms Gulf Breeze Lake and Estes Park National Park. The town started as a small cabin colony by white settlers in 1892. The first post office was established in 1893 and named for Captain James Fenton Destin who had been commandant at Fort Myers naval station on Pensacola Bay. The original inhabitants were mostly farmers and fishermen who brought their livestock to feed the local meadowlands which still exist today along with many beaches including Clearwater Beach and Destin Marina. In 1915, when both Mobile and Jacksonville were developed as seaports on mainland Alabama, interest in developing Destin increased because it would be within easy driving distance for either city center or its numerous businesses near Interstate 95 (the main artery through Alabama then). By 1900, Destin had reached its current size with only 4 businesses remaining and over 30 people living in downtown areas including banks and post office buildings. During World War II,destination Destin served as embarkation points for African Americans working on naval vessels bound for Japan; however most of these boats never arrived due to wartime restrictions on transportation across the Panama Canal which blocked many Oceanian shipping lanes at that time.
