Destin, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Monroe County, Florida. It was named for David F. Destin, who served as the U.S. Postmaster General from 1903 to 1909 and as a United States Senator from Florida from 1907 to 1911. The population of Destin was 527 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the east coast of Tampa Bay between Clearwater and St Petersburg, just south of US 1 and west of US 301. It is bordered by Pinellas County to the north, Hillsborough County to the west, and Sarasota County to the south. The county seat is St Petersburg. The area that would become Destin was first settled by Native American people in the early 1800s when they were drawn to trade with Spanish settlers in what is now Monroe County. In 1824 Englishman John Smith discovered land that would eventually become Gulf Stream Estates and began developing it into a farming area called "Tampa Bay". By 1830 there were over 100 residents living in what would become Destin Townshipalong with two schools, a courthouse, one jail and two churches. In 1892 Captain Harry Hickey purchase 4 lots near what became known as "Hollywood" on Tampa Bay Boulevard for $2 per acre (the current site of Hollywood Pier). He named his tract "Hollywood", after himself and built several homes there before selling it in 1902 to Jno Biddle Tucker Sr., who donated land for St Petersburg's first civic center which remains today downtown Destin. After World War II many veterans returned home from Europebrainwashed into thinking they needed nothing but consumer goods while their families struggled back on their own feet; this led some soldiers (such as those who fought in WWII) to start clubs or organizations such as Rotary International while others like Capt Harry Hickey turned their properties into subdivisions including: Hollywood Estates (1902), Sunrise Manor (1904), Pacific Heights (1907), Fort Pierce Estates (1920), Tarpon Springs (1925) etcetera all of which still exist today within modern day boundaries of Destin Townships - making it one of America's most diverse communities outside metropolitan areas!
Destin was founded on December 1, 1894 as a small town in Leon County, Florida. The name is derived from the St. Johns River which bisects the town and its namesake, Destin Island. The first store in Destin opened in 1895. The city was incorporated on May 25, 1907 and grew rapidly due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its role as a commercial port for boats transporting goods to and from Europe and Asia. By 1920, Destin had over 100 businesses including banks, hotels, restaurants, newspapers, movie theaters and a hospital. In 1941 the city became an all- black military area when the United States Supreme Court ruled that blacks were not protected under US Constitution clauses banning slavery
