Destin, Florida is a town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The town is known for its crystal clear waters, white sand beaches and history. The first people to live in Destin were Indians who hunted and gathered around the mouth of the Kissimmee River. In 1885, Destin became a community when two brothers named John Mclntyre and James Ahern bought land from the tribe of Seminole. They built homes on what is now Pioneer Boulevard and developed it into a small town with a post office, general store, lumberyard and schoolhouse. In 1887 Captain John Fergusson landed his ship "Omaha" in the harbor here after sailing from Havana, Cuba for Tampa Bay. He called this place Fort Myers because he had heard about an Indian settlement thereabouts that had been destroyed by Seminoles four years earlier. Captain Fergusson's ship brought over 10 thousand settlers to Fort Myers from different parts of America including Ireland, Scotland and Holland among others The first courthouse was built on Seventh Street near today's Veterans Memorial Park in 1889 which served as court house until 1912 when all courts were moved to downtown where they remain today In 1907 Destin obtained city status which enabled it to pass an ordinance establishing nightlife ordinances which prohibited public displays or drinking during night hours In 1929 construction began on what would become Stinson airport which served as both commercial and military airports until 1975 when it became Miami International Airport

Destin, Florida is a small town located in Sarasota County, Florida. It was founded in 1894 by J.M. Destin and his brother William B. Destin as a summer home for their father, George W. Destin. The name of the town comes from the Seminole Indian word "Destin." In 1926, the Legislature changed the name to Destin after General A.P. Hill's victory at Chickamauga Ridge inritis behalf of Ulysses S Grant's administration during the American Civil War. In 1925, two brothers named John and Donohue purchased land east of downtown and began to build a city on it which would become known as Jacksonville Beach. The City of Jacksonville Beach was incorporated on December 6th, 1928 and became an official municipality within Sarasota County on January 1st, 1929 under act number 4206 entitled "An Act To Regulate Commerce And Navigation In The Harbor Of Jacksonville Beach". The first permanent white inhabitants of Destin were James Fenton and his wife Anna on Christmas Day 1894 when they set up shop along what is now US-41 south of present day downtown (the Fenton store still stands today). Soon after this initial influx there were other families coming down to Sarasota for vacation or business reasons; among them were Elisha Hunt who settled along present day State Road 41A north of downtown in 1895 followed by Wm Hargrave (1896 – 1974) who built several homes near Cockrell Point before moving his family to Fort Myers in 1923 where he ran a grocery store; Harry Kapp (1898 – 1984), who established himself as one of the early carpet merchants hereabouts; Harlan Beeching (1901 -1978), who operated an ice cream parlor adjacent to his house until its closure in 1978; Asa Gardner (1902 -1983), general manager for First National Bank until its merger with Trust Company National Corporation six months later which created First Trust & Savings Bank Inc.; August Becker (1903 –2009), owner/operator of numerous restaurants including Steak 'n Shake from 1951 through 1959 before selling it to Ted Turner in 1985; Mrsgrace Murchison Livingstone (born October 13th 1907) who opened her first grocery store in 1922 at 1025 NW Second Street which served local residents until closing down thirty years later due to health concerns related to lead poisoning endemic throughout much southern Florida at that time Finally Edwin Poynton arriving from Tampa Bay aboard the SS Pensacola on November 20th 1905 foundered off Daytona Beach only eighty miles offshore while moored alongside shoreline providing live music every night during prohibition era days ashore drew crowds estimated anywhere from 5-10 thousand each week becoming one of most popular tourist attractions immediately preceding World War II . This last group includes descendants currently living here such as Louie Pineiro Sr., Cindy Landis Pineiro and friends Darnell Hilliard Jr., Kevin Barrett
In 1851, the area now known as Destin was part of a group of Seminole Indian nations who were forced to cede their lands to the United States. The area became a part of Florida in full in 1907 when it was admitted into the Union as a state.
