By 1860, over fifty stores were open in Destin with a total population of 5,000 people. In 1886 land was purchased from the Indian tribe known as the Choctaw for an agricultural community that would be called Choctaw Key. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1890 had reached 10,000 residents living on over 200 acres (100 hectares). A second courthouse was built in 1896 and soon afterwards additional businesses were opened including a bakery, cigar store and grocery store which became one of the largest in town until it closed its doors in 1978. During Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on August 29th 2004, damage seemed inevitable given that much property within city limits was destroyed or severely damaged; nonetheless some aspects of life continued unaffected such as grocery store shelves stocked with food that could still be eaten because supermarkets opened as usual but restaurants failed to meet occupancy levels; nevertheless many businesses reopened either through reconstruction efforts or rebranding themselves as “Resilience Houses” following advice from FEMA officials concerned about potential defaults should recovery efforts falter Many areas within city limits experienced significant flooding due primarily to rains falling on September 25th 2004 which reached upriver near downtown foregoing critical infrastructure like power plants that produce electricity then distributing it across Tampa Bay creating water depths reaching upto 33 feet (−10 m), making streets unlivable for automobiles and impassable for pedestrians especially during morning rush hours; nevertheless most communities managed relatively well despite infrastructure failures beyondDJT standards some struggling even further such as Friendship Heights where more than 60% of homes lost electrical service rendering it uninhabitable untilCrews arrived on October 16th 2005 just days before Thanksgiving
