Destin, Florida is a small town located in the middle of the state of Florida. It has a population of around 30,000 people and it is part of the Miami-Dade County municipality. The town was founded on December 12, 1922 by J.C. Destin and F.B. Phillips as a branch office for the Palm Beach Post newspaper. The name “Destin” comes from the Seminole word “deshon” meaning swamp or boggy ground. The first courthouse in Destin was built in 1924 and it served as the county seat until 1951 when it became a part of Kendallville which had a larger population then Destin at that time. The post office continued to be in operation until 1959 when it merged with the Coral Gables Post Office to form the present day Coral Gables Post Office which still serves today. In 1969, Destin was incorporated intoMiami-Dade County and has been an official city since then! One important event that took place in Destin during its early years was World War II when local residents helped contribute troops to fight in Europe against Nazi Germany. Many businesses were started here during this time including PPG (now known as PGE) who manufactured munitions, Coca ColaCola, Baskets Incorporated who made bread products and other items, banks such as First National Bank and Chase Manhattan Bank who operated branches here, hotels such as Embassy Suites Hotel and Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Casino which opened their doors throughout 1942-1945, TVA (the Tennessee Valley Authority) which built dams along rivers throughout central Florida to generate power for regional consumers, Baptist pastor Rufus Thomas whose church served as a community center from 1941-1944 and later also gave his services to provide social services within areas bombed by Allied bombers during World War II
