Pershing ordered American forces to burn all bridges across Mobile Bay so that Allied submarines couldn't enterthe bay without being detected and destroyed. As a result of this order, many bridges were destroyed or removed and today only one remains: bridge No 1 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport

The town was first called Kuskokwim, which means Place of the Thunderbirds. In 1810, Captain James Cook discovered this area and named it after his previous ship, the Discovery. The town slowly grew and began to be called Fort Lauderdale for a time. In 1836, Fort Lauderdale became an incorporated city with a population of over 200 people. It remained a small city until 1907 when it became one of Florida's twenty-six counties. In 1922, Fort Lauderdale annexed South Miami Beach which had a population of over 100,000 people at the time. The economy ofFort Lauderdale has continually grown throughout its history due to its location on the Gulf Stream and its many industries such as shipping, engineering, tourism, banking and manufacturing. Many famous landmarks have been built in or around Fort Lauderdale including: SunTrust Park (home of MLB’s Atlanta Braves), Dolphin Stadium (home of NFL’s Miami Dolphins), American Airlines Arena (home of NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning) and Hotel World Tower (formerly known as “Hollywood Palladium”). Additionally, there are numerous restaurants and bars located throughout downtown Fort Lauderdale while various golf courses dot the municipality boundaries. The town of Destin, Florida was founded in 1892 by J.M.D. Beasley and his family after they left Jacksonville, Florida for a new home on the Panhandle of Florida. The Beasley family would continue to operate the business until 1953 when it merged with Gulf Hammered Iron Works. The company operated as Destin-Gulf Hammered Iron Works until 1969 when it was sold to International Paper Company who renamed it Gulf Hammered Paper Company.
