Destin, Florida is a small community located in the state of Florida. The area that includes Destin has been inhabited by different groups of people for over 10,000 years. In 1914, Destin was founded as a town by European Americans on the east coast ofFlorida. Today, it is a thriving community with more than 8,000 residents and celebrates its culture and history every year with a variety of events. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Destin were French traders and fishermen who set up shop in the area in the late 1700s. By 1821, Fort Myers was established as an outpost on the bayous near where today’s downtown stands. As this trading post grew larger, so did its need for workers to build roads and other infrastructure. In 1828, two Spanish colonists arrived from Cuba and began developing what would become Destin as their new home. In 1861, during America’s Civil War (also known as the American Civil War), Confederate forces attempted to take control of Fort Myers after capturing it from Union forces. The fort was captured but not burned due to lack of cannon ammunition; instead it was used as an hospital for Confederate troops injured during the war. After the war ended, many African Americans fled northward into Florida because they didn’t want to be statesmen or join any side in battle; they chose instead to leave behind their homes and businesses in Georgia and Alabama. Many black Atlantics decided to move downriver into what is now Sarasota County because they felt that they had no choice but to flee racism experienced back home in Georgia or Alabama where exclusionisms still ran rampant at this time! For those who stayed behind- such as John Henry Hammond- these days are considered part of our community’s history! Hammond helped start both Fenton Brewing Company which continues operation today (and makes some delicious craft beers) and also served on one of Destin’s early city councils (.pdf). The growth continued throughout Reconstruction when white businessmen started moving into what would become downtown Destin full time through purchasing properties around here then subdivided them into parcels like today! Downtown became quite a scene with horse drawn carriages coming down Main Street stops while women cooked lunch out front or browsed local merchants when business wasn’t sufficiently brisk enough inside! Some say that this “downtown look[ed] much too similar [to Atlanta] for my taste], but I must confess my admiration for how well organized things were here back then (still are!). From here on out though I quickly got used to living amongst all those fine folks named Cooley!" What we see now above may seem mundane today however at that time it looked pretty darn cool! Businesses thrive due largely to providing excellent customer service whether you are running your own place or working at someone else's establishment!
