In 1941, the RAF Combat Crew Training School (CCTS), now known as air force basic training, was set up in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The first students were graduated in 1945 and soon after the CCTS became a Directorate of Military Education at Air University. Finally, it was redesignated as an Air Force Flying School in 1947 under the command of Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg Jr. With his death in 1949, control passed to Lieutenant Colonel James A. Hinton who served until 1951 when he was replaced by Colonel Richard Easley who served until 1957 when Lt Col George Kistiakowsky took over from him and resigned due to political reasons. In 1957 Maj Gen John Moulder became Commander-in-Chief of USAF for a five year term and during this time he directed the development of modern USAF aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom and F-111B Tigersteals which helped redefine American airpower for years to come. Lt Col George Kistiakowsky continued with Moulder’s guidance until his retirement in 1971 whereupon Lt Col Don Armstrong took over from him as commander-in-chief and continues today with 1st Eagle Squadron based at Lackland AFB Texas responsible for providing aerial refueling support to both US fighter jets and Tactical Airlift Command assets worldwide!
