Moseley on November 8, 1926 as a "dry" town to provide housing for citrus farmers who could not grow crops due to lack of water resources. The first home in Doral was built by Moseley and his wife Anna on land that later became part of the University ofMiami campus. In 1950, Doral became an official city after county commissioners voted 3-2 to allow annexation by Miami Beach. The opening of Dolphin Stadium in 2002 made Doral one of South Florida's most popular tourist destinations, and it has since become a center for wide variety of businesses and services related to real estate development, tourism, education, health care and other economic sectors. The name "Doral" comes from the Cumorah Micmac Indian word dalat (water). Colonel James L Moseley first named his new town after his discovery in Talbot County near present day Clearwater Beach some 20 miles north east of Key Biscayne; he thought this would be more convenient for shipping fruit because there was no harbor available nearer Key Biscayne proper where ships could berth while docking their cargoes with vegetables or other cargo." This site had been occupied by mangroves dating back 4500 years before Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León discovered what is now Tampa Bay on December 15th,. After landing on Pinellas Island near St Petersburg they sailed up what today is US 1st Avenue North towards what they believed was Cuba but came across a strange island called "Cumorah". Ponce de Leon called it Isla Santa Cruz (= holy island) which must have explained why this particular spot remained undetected for so many years until being discovered by American explorers under sail during French occupation in 1763 led Lt de Soto to christen it Fernandina = Saint Francois=Blessed woman=Island about 5 miles long & ½ mile wide west side Of Muskegon Bay (& Cozumel if you include Mexico City) De Soto only found 2 small villages living off hunting & fishing opportunity here! No evidence exists whatsoever that any people ever lived or died hereabouts.. .Mosesley renamed his town after himself - 'Dorals' meaning Water Meadows/Water Properties! In 1892 Dr JG Sanford moved from Jacksonville to open a dispensary here then known as Jacksonville General Hospital followed soon afterwards by St Josephs Seminary also located throughout much of our area including today’s University Park Corporate Center just south eastof I-75 exit 5A !!!!! Our wonderful friends at Univ Park were instrumental in making our dream come true when Houston Astronomical Society donated almost $100K towards building… Now we enjoy over 100 acres beautifully landscaped manicured lawnSUITE TO UNIVERSITY PARK!!
