Doral, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city was founded in 1925 by the father of current Mayor Carlos Gimenez. Doral's growth has been due to its location and various businesses that have located there over the years. In 2006, Doral was named one of "America's Top 10 Places to Live" by Forbes magazine. The area that now makes up Doral was first inhabited by the Timucua Indians before European arrival. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León discovered this area on October 6, 1513 while exploring what is now modern-day Texas looking for a route to Asia. He named the area La Isla de Santa Catalina after his patron saint,Catalina of Spain. The original town site was about 4 miles (6 km) west of present-day Doral on both sides of State Road A1A. It consisted of a small post office and three residences built in 1892 by Jnoeph Briceno, who also owned land near present-day Miami Beach and Hard Rock Stadium in South Miami Beach. Spanish traders first arrived in this area in 1795 when they landed at Fort Lauderdale on their way from Cuba to discharge goods collected along the Gulf coast during the French and Indian War between Britain and France. They called this area Bahia de los Negros because black people were sailing from Africa south through these waters each month for supplies carrying sugar off Cuban plantations into Spanish America (now Mexico). By 1810 most blacks had left for Tampa or Jacksonville because white settlers were arrive here already as part of efforts by Territorial Governor Manuel Menendez to establish new boundaries following Mexican adelgazaration which ended Spanish rule over Florida including much of Latin America east of Mexico City. In 1821 Captain James Cook charted what is now Flagler County as part of his third voyage around South America with HMS Endeavour under command of Lieutenant Commander Robert Ferguson RNR.. Doral, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Doral is located on the Gulf of Mexico and bordered to the north by Biscayne Bay and to the east by Kendallville. To its south lies Doral's namesake island which forms a natural chokepoint between South Beach and Downtown Miami. The land that makes up present day Doral was first inhabited by man about 10,000 years ago according to archaeological excavations conducted in 2001-2003 within what is now known as “The Doral Preserve” conservation area administered by The Nature Conservancy. The preserve contains several important archeological sites including two ancient villages dating back over 4,000 years old. One of these village sites has been restored and opened to the public as The Old Village Museum located on Ponce de Leon Boulevard just east of I-95 near Coral Gables Airport . Initial development in this area began around 1875 when Ayer Company founder George Snively donated 2 acres (800 m²) of his land north of Fort Myers for commercial development purposes following his purchase of property adjacent to Miamis Indian reservation from Chief Tecumseh Sherman pursuant to Treaty 11 . Development initially took place along a Native American trail leading from Stonington Landing on Clearwater River through today’s downtown Doral and then out into Biscayne Bay before coming ashore near modern day Mango Key across from Jupiter Inlet . In 1899 Captain Edward Condon purchased 600 acres (2 km²) stretching along Collins Avenue between Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Mango Key from Juana Capote Reyes with plans for an extensive citrus orchard ..Captain Condon named his new tract “Doral” after his homeport – Port Arthur, Texas – where he had served as captain during World War I.. This initial investment allowed him to build one of Miami’s earliest successful commercial developments.. By 1930 Captain Condon had developed an additional 1,500 acres (4 km²) extending northwestward from Collins Avenue ..This original acreage would eventually become known as “The Rancho Doral”..During this time period many prominent people such as FBI Director J Edgar Hoover were headquartered at The Rancho Doral detention camp operated by Sheriff Donny Hathaway while awaiting trial.. resulting in some controversy due to allegations that law enforcement officials used detainees at The Rancho Doral for unethical activities such as sexual abuse.. In 1957 Captain John Day purchased 3/5ths of all remaining ranch acreage extending into today’s southwest corner of Broward County from William Harrah who also owned 3/5ths ownership in Palm Beach County ..Day renamed his new tract “Doral" after his hometown - Dorchester Heights , Massachusetts - where he had been born in 1918... Today more than 20% of all production takes place on "The Plantation" which encompasses 640 acres (2 km²) located southeast Of Miami inside Everglades National Park
