The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the people of Dunedin, Florida on Christmas day in 1947. The gift was the first Boeing P-51D Mustang fighter plane, and it was brought to the area by means of airdrops. The fighter plane had been sent as part ofOperation Paperclip, which was an effort by the USAAF to bring European pilots and aircrew back to America in order to fight in World War II. The aircraft arrived at Dunedin Airport on December 2nd, 1947, and it took its first flight that day. Onboard were three American pilots: First Lieutenant Don Armstrong (later commander of Operation Participation), Second Lieutenant Dean Earnest (later a Colonel in the USAF) and Captain Jack Welsh (commanding officer of units stationed in New Zealand). The jet-powered Mustang was an expensive acquisition for the local community - but it was worth it when used by the Dunedin Air Cadets Squadron. These young men were essential for training new pilots for America's war effort – and their victory over Japanese fighters during combat operations is commemorated with a plaque at Dunedin Airport today.

In 1839, a group of Irish immigrants started a cattle ranch that would later give its name to the city. The earliest businesses in Dunedin were mercantile stores and inns related to maritime trade along the now known as Long Island Sound. By 1860, there were more than 20 businesses operating in Dunedin proper. In 1870, two brothers founded Jardine's Wharf on Long Island Sound which became one of the most popular tourist destinations on Long Island for fishing and boating enthusiasts. Jardine's Wharf also became home to many local newspapers including The Evening Sun which was founded by James Wirt Hargrave in 1876. In 1903, Jardine's Wharf was completely destroyed by fire which led to an economic decline for the town but it did not disappear entirely; over time new businesses took their place that continue today as downtown Dunedin reinventes itself as one of South Florida's leading cultural destinations with world-renowned art galleries and restaurants lining both sides of Broadwalk at Pineapple Avenue adjacent to Biltmore Estate golf course & Spa Resort
The first settlers in Dunedin, Florida were James Cook and his team of four British explorers who sailed from London in 1768. They explored the area that is now known as Pinellas County and named it after Mount Dunedin, a peak on the Scottish mainland. The first permanent settler in Dunedin was John Wesley who arrived in 1779. He built a small cabin on the bank of the St Johns River. The first store opened in 1824. In 1829, the town was platted and named by J. C. Penney as Dunedin after Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Auld's recommendation. It became an important center for trade with Cuba and other parts of South America during this time period.
