Dunedin, Florida is a city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,682 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and the only municipality in the county. Dunedin was founded by Spanish colonists in 1837 as San Marcos de la Vega and was named for General José Martínez y Toro, who had died in 1826 during Mexican-American War. The first permanent white residents were David Dixon and his wife Rebecca Norton Dodge on November 12, 1839. They set up a store and tent colony on what is now known as Main Street near present day University Boulevard. In 1840 an act of Congress designated Dunedin "the county seat" of Polk County; however, this designation did not take effect until May 1st of that year when Judge John Cranch moved from Pensacola to become the first Justice of the Peace for Polk County. On February 15th of 1861 Dunedin became part of Seminole County when it was created from parts of two other counties - Hillsborough and Duval - following special election laws enacted to gain statehood for Florida under President Abraham Lincoln Gettysburg Address forty-six days after Abraham Lincoln's inauguration as president on March 4th 1865 Dunedin experienced significant growth during its early years due to its location close to Tampa Bay and its role as a supply stop on transportation routes between Tampa and Jacksonville. Shipbuilding played a significant role in Dunedin's economy through its creation of wooden warships such as USS Constitution (1797), USS Flagstaff (1853), USS Dahlgren (1860) and USS Porter (1895). In 1907 local shipbuilder Julliard & Sons built one of America’s largest warship – HMS Dreadnought (1910). During World War II much production took place at nearby Plantation Quarry which produced armaments including tanks, planes and warships like HMS Hood (1938) The city received national attention when ithosted both Super Bowl XXXVIII Rams vs 49ers(2002)and Super Bowl XLIX Patriotsvs Colts(2006) games which were televised nationally by CBS with ESPN providing live coverage .Both games saw large crowdslynounaturallywiththe excep ted for XXXVIII which drew over 150,000 people before kickoff while XLIX attracted over 150,000 people from across Central Florida before kickoff . These events demonstrated Dunedin’s continued importance as an entertainment destination both domestically and abroad .
On September 28, 1892, Dunedin was incorporated as a town by the Florida Legislature. It had been proposed to do so by J. E. Dunning, who owned the land that would later become the town. The first elections were held on November 3, 1892 and James Hickey was elected mayor with 51% of the vote. The first school in town was built in 1893 and the first post office opened in 1896. The name of the town was changed to Dunedin after Captain James Dunning, an American Revolutionary War veteran and founder of Jacksonville, Florida
