The Dunedin, Florida Army National Guard is one of the most veteran and prestigious units in the United States military. The unit was formed on September 17, 1951 from a merger of two other disbanded regiments in the state. The first members of the Dunedin, Florida Army National Guard were sworn in at Fort Myers Municipal Airport on October 1, 1951. Since its inception, the Dunedin, Florida Army National Guard has fought in numerous wars including World War II; Korea; Vietnam; and Iraq and Afghanistan. DUNEDIN, FLORIDA – Dunedin is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Dunedin were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who arrived on horseback in 1795. They named the area "Château-d'Or" ( castle or estate of gold) after the Spanish gold mine near Valdivia, Chile where they had been exploring for minerals since 1785. In 1835, Englishman James Mosely surveyed and laid out a townsite on the east side of Mobile Bay for a steamboat company named The Pensacola Steam Navigation Company. Captain John Sledge discovered and mapped the Red Sea Railroad in 1839 while exploring Arabia Felix Gulf for shipping routes to India and China. In 1865, General Andrew Jackson Key sold Dunedin to J. Prentice Coleman for $1 million dollars which made it one of America's largest land sales at that time. Coleman developed it into an agricultural center with cotton plantations; eventually becoming known as "the father of Florida". After years of growth and development by Coleman's heirs, many new subdivisions were established including Oneida Park Estates (1910), Central Park (1925), Forest Hills (1930), Lakeshore Estates (1945), Belleair Estates (1950) and Pineland Courts (1965). The area now known as Dunedin, Florida was first inhabited by the Timucua people. The area was explored by Spanish explorers in the 16th century and it was part of the Spanish colony of Santa Fé in Cuba until 1821. In 1837, Dunedin became a United States Territory following the Mexican–American War. The town grew rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s as settlers arrived from Georgia and South Carolina. By 1900, Dunedin had a population of over 1,000 residents. It participated in the American Civil War as a Confederate military post. After the war, Dunendish developed into an agricultural center with a large cotton plantations and a flour mill.
