Dunedin, Florida is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,641 at the 2010 census. Dunedin is the second most populous city in Polk County after Polk City. It was founded on December 5, 1837 by pioneers from New York City who came to find new land for themselves and their families during the Seminole Wars. The original settlers of Dunedin were Dutch farmers and traders who arrived in what is now Polk County in 1837. They named the area "New Amsterdam," after the Dutch colony of New Netherland which had been located nearby since 1624. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location near both Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and Jacksonville, Florida as well as its easy access to wagon roads and railroads. In 1841, Dunedin became a town when it annexed portions of neighboring Clearwater Township. As part of a effort to increase cotton production in areas such as nearby Winter Haven and Lakeland, the town began building gin plants and other mills around 1860. In 1865, Dunedin incorporated as a city under state law following the passage of an act by the General Assembly that allowed municipalities within county boundaries to be chartered without having to go through an election campaign or receive voter approval. The city's first mayor was James Wickersham Jr., also one of its founders; he served until his death in 1893. In 1898, following annexation by Orlando into Orange County, Dunedin becameOrlando's third-largest municipality with a population of 508 residents living on an area that included parts of both cities today totaling over 1 million people! Dunedin experienced significant growth during World War II; it reached its peak population size at 1007 residents in 1945 and remained above that number until 1957 when it dipped below 900 residents for only three years before rebounding back above 1000 citizens again! Following World War II there was major development throughout downtown including construction of several large office buildings including One Orange Street which still stands today - once home to Macy's department store! Additionally numerous homes were built throughout downtown along with several parks including Central Park which remains one of America's largest open-air green spaces! During this time many restaurants opened up all across town giving visitors much needed variety while also providing jobs for local citizens during wartime months! After war ended however many businesses closed down leaving downtown largely empty except for occasional concerts or special events like championship games or conventions! In 1995 however Dunedo annexed additional land eastward extending beyond US 1 making it one more neighborhood within our ever growing community!!!
