Dunedin, Florida is a census-designated place in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Myers–Fort Walton Beach–Pinellas National Forest. The area now known as Dunedin was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1836, Colonel James Wilkinson founded Dunedin on what is now Collier Bayou and named it for his estates in Scotland. In 1861, the town was established as a result of an act of Congress that designatedCollier County as a land grant to John C. Dunlap Sr., one of Florida's original colonists. The town was renamed after Admiral David Dixon Porter during World War II to honor General George Washington Porter (1828-1912), who had served with distinction in the American Revolution and Mexican War before becoming secretary of war under President Polk in 1858. In 1865, Dunlap donated 160 acres (65 hectares) along Presentation Bayou to create a new community called Venice which became home to over 300 residents within two years due to its excellent water conditions and easy access to markets and commerce. Afterward [the] mayoralty rotated among citizens through election held annually at odd years intervals until 1916 when voters appointed their own unicameral City Council... Although there have been several occasional changes in members since then (elected officials include Mayor Emeritus Daryl Kagan), council meetings generally take place at least monthly so that all residents are kept up to date with business.... The growth of southern Floridians during World War II brought increased development around downtown Dunedin including more than 50 businesses surrounding First Street between Park Avenue and Miami Road each creating what is still considered one of South Florida’s most vibrant areas today; however much has changed since then including many homes being replaced or destroyed by new developments while downtown itself barely escaped any damage from Hurricanes Irma or Maria last fall resulting in some minor closures for cleanup operations but no loss of life or property damage thankfully! Dunedin enjoyed some stability following Hurricane Irma although significant damage occurred including significant flooding affecting parts both inside and outside city limits making reopening difficult if not impossible months later; fortunately however no lives were lost or valuable property was damaged thanks largely to quick response efforts led by local Volunteer firefighters!
