The history of the Dunedin Naval Base can be traced back to 1922 when it was established as a naval station on the west coast of Florida. The base was initially used for training recruits and sailors for the United States Navy. It soon became an important logistical center for America’s military forces in the Caribbean and Gulf region. In 1945, Dunedin AFB was accepted into the United States Air Force and became known as Orlando-Dunedin AFB. The name change came about because at that time, Dunedin AFB was just a small airfield with no significant role in American military operations outside of Florida. In 1963, the United States Navy merged its fleet from two separate bases – NAS Jacksonville (now NAS Miami) and NAS Tampa Bay – into one singlebase, which would come to be called USS North Carolina (CVN 73). At this point, USS North Carolina had become America’s largest carrier by displacement and could also serve as a command ship for allied navies. The merged navy beganTo deploy combat troops again aboard its new carrier in 1967 after spending eight years deployed off shore deployments Mideast peacekeeping missions during Operation Neptune’s Spear and Vietnam War peacekeeping missions during Operation Starlite II. In 1975, USS North Carolina returned to seaports along with her sister ship USS Enterprise (CVN 66), both having been reactivated from their retirement berths following more than 25 years without active hostilities or major accidents occurring on their crews or ships. These were shortly followed by three more carriers – USS Coral Sea (LHD 5), USS Enterprise (CVN 66) and USS John F Kennedy (CVN 65) – making Dunedin Naval Base one of only four U.S.-based naval forces authorized to maintain Carrier Battle Groups capable of opposing any hostile force afloat at sea level while simultaneously providing logistic support to other embarked units engaged ashore. This unique capability served as a steadying influence during times of rapid expansion within NATO; examples include Response Force deployments in Kosovo during 1999 & 2000; Desert Storm Operations in 1991-1993; Hurricane Katrina aftermath in 2005-2006; Afghanistan Emergency response in 2007 & 2008; Syrian Civil War demonstrations against Assad regime beginning 2011″

Dunedin, Florida is a city located in the state of Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Osceola County and has a population of over 120,000 people as of 2010. The City of Dunedin was founded on February 2, 1892 by residents of Fort Myers Beach. The land for the city was donated by Judge Isaac Purdy. The first mayor was John A. Medley and the first council was made up of nine citizens. On October 1st 1904 Dunedin became a town when it annexation from Fort Myers Beach took place. In 1912 Dunenton built its first water tower which still stands today in downtown. In 1916 Dunenton began to build its first school and it opened on November 8th 1918 with grades one through twelve students teaching in temporary classrooms until new buildings could be constructed. In 1924-1925 construction started on the present day library which opened its doors on December 12th 1925 with an initial collection of $2,500 In 1951-1952 Dunedin annexed neighboring towns Plantation and Hillsborough into the city limits creating what is now known as Seminole Heights neighbourhood within the city limits On January 1st 1959 when Osceola County changed its name to Polk County Dunedin became part of that county The current Mayor is Jeff Kapp who took office on January 3rd 2013

The name "Dunedin" came from the Indian word "dhuna". One theory suggests that the name came from a place called Dhuna on St. Johns River where English traders were trading with the Seminole Tribe and learned to call this river Dunedin because it was free from sandbars and had a clear channel. The first settler in Dunedin was Rev. John Richardson who arrived in 1837 and named his new community after one of his mentor's, Sir James Dunmore, 4th Baronet, who founded Fort George on St. Johns River two years earlier!
