The history of the Naval Service in Dunedin, Florida can be traced back to 1892. At that time, the town had a small navy and it was only until 1895 that the first ship in the town’s fleet was built- an old brigantine named “Thetis”. In 1903, Dunedin erected its own lighthouse which became operational on October 15th of that year. The following year, however, saw a shift in naval activity as Japan began World War I and began construction on what would become known as the “Lighthouse of Shame”. The project was completed in 1915 but failed to quell fears of war between America and Japan. Despite this setback, Dunedin continued to grow as a port with new installations including an oil refinery in 1916 and a military harbor in 1922. In 1938, however, when World War II started, Dunedin put itself at risk by becoming one of several ports along Florida’s coast open to Japanese vessels seeking refuge from American forces. However, after months of preparations and warning shots being fired into the air by local residents (many of whom were also reservists), Dunedin came out unscathed during hostilities which lasted for three years. During postwar reconstruction efforts, coastal towns across Florida were encouraged to establish their own navies with the ultimate goal of deterring future aggression from abroad. As part of this effort, ideas for naval gifts were floated around townspeople – some more practical than others but all intended to send a message: We are here to stay!
