Dunedin, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,724 at the 2010 census. Dunedin is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Scotsmen in 1837 as a penal colony for Native Americans who had been convicted of crimes against white people. It became a town in 1907 and was named after Sir John Dunmore, 1st Viscount Dunmore. In 1915 the name was changed to Dunedin in honor of Rear Admiral Ernest Jellicoe, Commander-in-Chief British Fleet during World War I. On November 16th 1918 General Douglas MacArthur arrived with his divisions from California to take over American forces fighting on the Western Front and naming himself Supreme Commander Europe after receiving orders from President Woodrow Wilson. In 1931 Danville Road (now Donnybrook Drive) were added to the town boundaries making it one large street grid with an area of . This greatly increased business opportunities since residents could now travel easily between their homes and businesses without having to go through Duval County or Hillsborough County which were then two very separate jurisdictions. The towns growth continued until about 1940 when World War II began and many male college students enlisted in the military and took up permanent residency in various towns across America; including coastal communities like Miami Beach and Fort Myers Beach near Jacksonville; while female college students joined the armed services too but maintained their addresses within their home states During World War II there were no restrictions on firearms ownership so most citizens had access to any firearm they wanted including shotguns, rifles, handguns etc.; however ammunition storage requirements for all civilians turned into an issue due to government demand for more munitions than had been available even before Pearl Harbor . On November 5th 1951 voters returned three incumbents - Mayor Willis Dickson (D), Jr., City Clerk Norma Linton (L) - following early voting days which totaled 237 ballots cast out of a total population 2,811 .
