At that time, the area around present-day Dunedin was part of what was known as St. Petersburg Township. Captain Smith's group arrived at Fort Myers on February 9th and quickly set about exploring this new land they had discovered. They found an excellent location for a settlement and named their new town after themselves - Dunedin meaning "place where there are forests." The first permanent inhabitants of modern-day Dunedin were Englishmen who had Come to Florida from Nova Scotia in 1835 under the leadership of Major George Rogers Clark. These Englishmen built a small fort in what is now downtown Dunedin to protect their interests in the area during this time period before moving on to create other settlements throughout southernFlorida. Over time, various cultures have interacted with each other within and outside of Douglaston; however, little tangible evidence exists which confirms this interaction existed beyond rumor or anecdote at best. One significant event which occurred during this time period happened when Seminole Indians attacked British settlers near present-day Clearwater Springs on December 9th 1837 while most everyone inside Fort Myers were attending Christmas dinner! Unfortunately for those colonists caught between two hostile groups it wasn't until January 8th 1840 when reinforcements arrived from Canada that all escaped alive back into British hands! This attack not only demonstrated Indian strength but also underscored just how much danger Britons were currently facing as their colonies grew larger both militarily and politically across North America due to Spain's influence within Mexico City! In short, although no physical evidence exists to support any form of cultural exchange between these groups past or present day it does appear that some form did take place; however, we cannot know for certain what exactly transpired because no records remain from that particular era!
