The first settlers of Dunedin were James Witherspoon and his family who came from Scotland in 1821. They built a cabin on what is now known as State Road A1A which served as their home for many years. In 1846, Dr. John Troup established a hospital in Dunedin and it soon became an important stop on the road between Tampa and Jacksonville. In 1865, Mr. Jno. Giddings purchased land east of town from Dr. Troup for $500 and began to build a house which he called "Gidings House". He also erected a white picket fence around his property to keep Native Americans out. In 1887, Mrs Jane Goodspeed donated land along State Road A1A to become the town square of Dunedin which contained six businesses including three stores, two hotels and one schoolhouse among others The first post office was opened in 1912 by Wm Hite with four mail boxes On December 4th 1914, King George V granted Dunedin its charter as an incorporated city In 1916, when World War I started, most ofringers left for Europe but some stayed behind to help build up the city During World War II there was no shortage of workers either due to lack of other options or because people had already decided that they would be patriotic Americans . The war resulted in little loss except for damage done to several homes . On November 5th 1945 local residents voted overwhelmingly (93%+) not to secede from the United States after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor

The first permanent European settlement in what is now Dunedin was on a small island off the coast of Jacksonville,Florida in 1795. By 1800, a group of British adventurers had reached Dunedin and began trading with local natives. In 1821, Englishman James Kenedy established a ranch on what is now Kenedy Island and began to cultivate sugarcane.Kenedy's plantation eventually became one of the largest and most successful in Florida.
