The Air Force has been providing a service to the citizens of Edgewater, Florida for over 60 years. The base is home to three wings which house the majority of the USAF's operational aircraft. It also houses storage and support buildings for an extensive collection of aircraft and equipment. In 1966, when Colonel James S. Gilmore was appointed Commander Edgewater Air Force Base, his goal was to provide "a nucleus around which all other activities may be based." Gilmore's vision would come to fruition in 1974 when General Rick Atkinson became Commander with responsibility for all USAF installations statewide. In 1985 General John P. Walsh assumed command and dedicatedEdgewater AFB as "the world’s largest airbase" with nearly 350 acres (158 hectares) of runway surface available for military activity including bomber operations, fighter training, or humanitarian aid flights. With its current population of over 20,000 people, Edgewater AFB is one of the largest military bases in Florida. The civilian community provides many services that are integral to RAF Edgewater's continued success such as fire suppression; mental health care; waste management; traffic control; emergency response; and security patrols during local events like hurricanes or major Tornadoes on Airport property

Edgewater is located on Miami-Dade County's east side, about southeast of downtown Miami and north of central Kissimmee. The town was founded in 1887 by brothers Alfred and George Edgewater as an agricultural community with a population of ten people. In 1923 the name changed to honor Admiral David Hyde Park (1848–1925), who had played an important role in saving Cuba from Spanish domination during the Cuban Revolution. The city was incorporated on July 1, 1925. The city's economy relies on agriculture and services such as transportation, banking and trade; it also has an active nightlife scene that includes several clubs and restaurants including the famous Tallahassee Club which overlooks Lake Okeechobee. In recent years Edgewater has undergone numerous redevelopment projects including a new library/community center complex completed in 2006; a new football stadium being constructed by TIAA-CREF for the Miami Dolphins; and renovation of its Edward Jones Dome which began in 2007 and will be finished in 2020.

The purpose of this visit was to commemorate American assistance given during Operation Allied Victory in World War II which ended with Japan's capitulation on September 2nd 1945. On October 15th 2008 President Obama ordered that all remaining military aircraft belonging to both services be retired and stored at Davis-Monthan AFB outside Tucson AZ while plans are made for their eventual disposition. Edgewater is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Edgewater was James A. Hinton who came to the area in 1859 with his family from Tennessee. He named his settlement after Englishman Sir Edmund Belcher who had explored and charted this region during the early 1800s. Edgewater experienced rapid growth following World War II when Tampa military officials decided to build a large army training ground and headquarters on a tract of land that included parts of present-day Edgewater. The community gradually expanded until it reached its current size thanks to various residential subdivisions and infill development over the years. In 2002, Edgewater became one of seventeen communities within the new city of St Petersburg which were formed as a result of annexation by Tampa Bay Authority as part of efforts to make downtown more vibrant and walkable for residents and businesses alike. Today, Edgewater remains an important stop on cross-town bus routes as well as local attractions such as Lake Worth Country Club where golfers can tee off before hitting the beach for day or night outings. In addition, there are several restaurants, cafes, and small shops situated throughout the town center which offer unique perspectives on Florida's sunniest location - perfect for browsing before or after dinner excursions into nearby Gulf villages or Clearwater Beach itself!
