The United States Army Garrison in Edgewater, Florida was established on December 12, 1907. At the time it was one of the first garrison towns in Florida and it served as a training ground for the local militia and cavalry units until 1912. In 1916, the US Army decided to move its headquarters from Fort Myer, Virginia to Edgewater. The Headquarters Company of the 4th Infantry Regiment arrived in town on November 15th and there were already some initial construction projects under way such as barracks and a mess hall. On January 1st 1917, Major General John J. Pershing assumed command of all American forces in Europe and ordered his army administrators to establish an armory at Edgewater so that weapons could be procured for use against the Germans. The armory became operational on February 5th and soon began accumulating war surplus materials such as rifles, pistols and machine guns. On May 10th 1917, Congress passed the National Defense Act which authorized President Woodrow Wilson to construct two more infantry battalions at Edgewater with an eye towards augmenting America’s manpower presence in Europe. However by October 1917 only one battalion had been raised at Edgewater while other battalions were stationed around the country. The decision was made to disband both battalions by December 31st 1917 due to lack of volunteers or available soldiers. In 1918 Colonel Harry Kesselman took command of both battalion’s successor companies who continued operating until 1919 when they too were disbanded due to World War I ending without any significant battlefield success against Germany or Austria-Hungary).
