The Coast Guard has been a part of Edgewater, Florida for over 100 years. Edgewater is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-St. Augustine Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1884, John Akerlund and his wife Hilda founded the town of Edgewater on an uninhabited island in St. Marks River. They named their community after their favorite place in Norway - Edsvik (the old Uppsala capital). The first store opened in 1886 and residents soon started to build homes around the island for themselves and their families. In 1903, they voted to change the name to Edgewater so that it would be more accurate with its location on beautiful St. Johns River shoreline opposite Jacksonville proper. In 1935, Edgewater acquired its own post office which still exists today as part of ZIP code 89512. In 1957, when Interstate 95 was built through Polk County, most of the Island became available for development; however, some people from Edgewater kept living on the Island until 1978 when they finally moved out and developed what is now known as "The Green". The population has slowly declined over time due to various reasons including loss of jobs associated with heavy industry departure or relocation away from Florida; however, recent gentrification efforts have resulted in a renewed interest in this agricultural community by businesses seekingto tap into its history and culture while also locating within walking distance of several cafes/restaurants/stores/markets/.
