It is located on State Road 511, about 12 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale and 15 miles south of Palm Beach. The town was founded in 1892 by brothers John and Edward Edgewater. Edgewater is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,585 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Edgewater was founded by Elisha Cooke in 1851 as a small trading post on the west bank of the St John's River. In 1875 it became the county seat for Monroe County and acquired its present name when incorporation took place that year. The first post office in Edgewater opened in 1876. The community was established around a small Fort Myers-based cotton gin and mill which were built during the late 1800s to process Indian cotton brought overland from Georgia and Alabama. The cotton gin and mill were destroyed by fire in 1905; however, a new cotton gin and mill were built at Edgewater in 1906 by J.C. Beasley Limited Partnership under contract with Pascagoula Cotton Mills Inc., one of several local textile mills that developed during World War I along with nearby Stoneville, Pinellas Park, and Dunedin (later West Palm Beach). According to the United States Census Bureau, Edgewater has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,462 people, 553 households, and 388 families residing in the town. The population density was 924 people per square mile (351/km²). There were 621 housing units at an average density of 367 per square mile (165/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White European American; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; <0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race constituted 3%.Of those who lived here permanently (%) most reported being born outside US: 7%. Of those who only moved here for school (%) most reported attending college: 71%. Of those who grew up here but left behind some form of home country education (%) most reported attending some form of international school: 15%.
