Edgewater, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Edgewater is located on the edge of Lake Okeechobee and on U.S. 27 between St Petersburg and Kissimmee. The first people to live in Edgewater were French Canadians who came to work on sugar plantations in 1837-38. A post office was established here in 1843, and a store was opened in 1865 by J. W. Alliston Jr.. In 1886, Hernando Ponce de León purchased land here from Elisha Graves for $10,000 In 1907, Fenton Manufacturing Company bought a farm here for $7200 which became their plant until it closed in 1961 due to economic recession The first school in Edgewater was built in 1895 by Mrs. Maud Whitehead as an elementary school for 'colored children'. It served as an all-white school until 1922 when it became part of the Jacksonville School District . In 1923 it changed its name to Park Elementary School after Park Avenue where it stood until 1959 It then became home to First Methodist Episcopal Church (now called First Baptist) from 1960-1965 before becoming Covenant Christian School from 1966-1980 Finally being renamed Edgewater Intermediate School from 1980-1991 . In 1995–1996 alone there were 107 new homes built within walking distance of the high school campus

Edgewater is a town on the St. Johns River in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and forms a part of the Jacksonville-Boca Raton Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Edgewater was John A. Payne who arrived in 1839. He named his land "Edgewater" after his childhood home, "Ede Park". The town was platted in 1846 by Drury and Witherspoon as a community for Episcopal clergymen who were moving from Old Town Jacksonville to new buildings on Government Wharf near present-day downtown Jacksonville. In 1851, when Jack Crouch became sheriff of Duval County, he appointed Jens Poulsen as town controller to oversee development within Edgewater's boundaries and to maintain order among its citizens during times of social unrest or political instability. In 1865, when Florida became an all-Union state, Edgewater's incorporation as a town made it one of the few Confederate-occupied towns in Duval County; it remained so even after Union troops deserted that year during the Civil War and never recovered its former level of prosperity until Reconstruction began more than sixty years later. By 1900 Edgewater had declined precipitously—its population had fallen to 1,715 from 2,075 just ten years earlier—butovery has seen rapid growth since then: the population reached 2,955 by 2000 and is now over 4,000 strong (though still less than half of what it was when founded). The history of Edgewater can be traced back to its earliest days as an agricultural settlement; early pioneers farmed cottonseed crops along both banks of the river while also raising livestock for meat and hides. In 1892 two brothers purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of town from Denton Snively for $10 per acre (4¢ per hectare). At that time there were only about 10 people living in Edgewater; today there are more than 30 households and nearly 100 businesses located within its borders alone! The brothers developed their land into a large cotton plantation which produced some Ofcinal Ulysses S Grant–era clothing items such as shawls and other accessories used by Ulysses S Grant’s wife Julia Child while she lived away at her family’s farm near Mount Washington in New York City during World War I before returning home to teach school nearby; they also grew sugarcane which gave them income sufficient enough to support themselves through winter months without selling their crop outright to buyers outside our area! Edgewater changed hands several times over its Early American period but always continued To Own or Operate Our Own Cotton Plantation Which Produced Alloys And Clothing For President James K Polk And Other Famous Americans By 1905 We Had More Employees Than Any Other Business In Jacksonville And Bought A Mill To Make More Cotton So We Could Sell It All! But This Wasnt Enough To Keep Us From Becoming Another Small Town After World War II When The demand For Cotton Got So High That Some People Lefted Us Just As Others Found New Jobs Or Started Their Own Families!. Today We Have About 20 Households & 100 Businesses Inside Our Village Limits!.
