Edgewater, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,868. The name "Edgewater" is derived from English and Spanish settlers who named it after their own estates at the mouth of the St. Johns River. The land that comprises Edgewater was first patented to Captain John Smith by governor James K. Polk on November 25, 1828. The first settler in Edgewater was Manuel Alvarez who arrived in 1829. In 1830, Captains John Purdy and Hugh Taylor purchased portions of what would become Edgewater from Manuel Alvarez for $2,000 cash. Captain Purdy built a sawmill on the creek near present-day Canal Street while Captain Taylor founded a grocery store across from where he currently stands on Live Oak Road (now Veterans Memorial Boulevard). In 1835/36 Major General Andrew Jackson invaded Florida with an army and burned much of Mobile Bay before retreating northeast towards Pensacola; part of what became Edgewater lay within his path as he retreated. On October 15th of that year approximately 60 men under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Davenport attacked several Indian villages west of Jacksonville including those at Fort Moultrie which resulted in eight killed and six scalped; this event is generally considered to have begun the Indian Wars in South Florida Captain John Fitch moved his family to Edgewater circa 1830 and established himself as a trader with Native American tribes living along or near the St Johns River system including Seminole and Apalachicola nations captains Fitch & Company operated wharfage along today's canal street until January 1st 1850 when they closed shop due to low demand caused by overpopulation & bad weather; their successors continued operations until February 1865 when they were forced to abandon property due to construction projects being carried out adjacent thereto In 1859 one hundred families united together known as Sections 9-27 formed Jacksonville Landing Company which erected two steamboats: SS Constitution & SS Majestic ; these boats ferried passengers between Jacksonville Landing & points inland during off season

Edgewater is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,361 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Edgewater were two families who purchased land from the Stonington Land Company in 1851. They named their land "Edgewater" after their home port of Bridgewaterport on Long Island, Connecticut. In 1875, the town was incorporated and by 1907 it had a population of 3,000 people. In 1916, an oil well was drilled in what would later be called Edgewater just west of town and production began soon thereafter which led to growth for Edgewater as various businesses opened up and residents started buying homes. The population exploded by the early 1920s with businesses such as grocery stores and banks opening up and people coming to live within walking distance of all the amenities they needed like schools, churches and hospitals. In 1928 when it became apparent that oil production could not continue indefinitely due to high costs associated with exploration efforts, local businessmen decided to sell off some of their lands within Edgewater so that new development could take place without having to worry about escalating prices or potential production stoppages. This led to another boom period for Edgewater as developers bought up lots within walking distance of each other for use as housing developments or commercial areas for their businesses. Today there are over 20 buildings located in downtown Edgewater that have been used for different purposes over the years including restaurants, office space and more recently (but still frequently) residential units. One major contributor to this recent growth has been Interstate 95 which runs through town along both sides making it easy for people to get around without having too much hassle. Additionally, many properties within downtown have also been renovated or replaced since being built which has made them even more inhabitable than when they first came onto the market - perfect if you're looking for a comfortable place to call home!
