Edgewater is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Edgewater were Methodist brothers John and James Barger who built a log cabin on what is now Highland Avenue in 1792. They named their tract "Acre" after one of their acreage holdings along that route. The town's first post office opened in 1824 and its name was changed to Edgewater in 1885 when it became an incorporated municipality. In 1912, the Edison Brothers electric company built a line from downtown Miami to Edgewater, becoming one of the earliest commercial providers of electricity in South Florida. The line led to economic development as people began using it for shopping, dining and commuting to work. The Edison Brothers Electric company was acquired by Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1948, which sold it to General Electric Company two years later. GE continued operating the electric company until 1971 when it merged with American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) to form Verizon Communications Incorporated. Edgewater has seen significant redevelopment over the years; some examples include the erection of thousands of homes during the 1960s and 1970s following a period of rapid population growth; annexation by North Miami Beach during 1992-1994 as part of a larger land reclamation project; and establishment of several parks including Colonial Park (now known as Doral), Lakeshore Park (now called Jupiter), and Regency Park (now known as Bay Shore).
Edgewater was founded in 1892 by J.C. Harmon and his brother, George Harmon. The first store was a grocery and items were bought fresh from the land. In 1915, the family changed their name to Harmon Brothers Company and opened their first department store on Main Street in Edgewater. The store grew quickly and in 1928 they moved to 380 N Miami Ave., which became home of the company's largest department store ever with over 100,000 square feet of floor space. In 1954, the company merged with JCPenney Corporation, becoming one of America's leading retail companies. In 1967, ECM Incorporated (later Sears) purchased the Harmon Brothers Company for US$2 million and renamed it Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc.). Edgewater continued to serve as headquarters for Sears until it closed its doors in 1991 after more than 130 years of business success at the location.
