The name "Edgewater" comes from early European settlers' pronunciation of the Native American word meaning "estuary." Edgewater was founded in 1885 and named after J.P. Morgan's estate on Sea Island which was then part of Fort Lauderdale Harbor. The town became incorporated on December 12, 1912. On November 25, 1923, Edgewater celebrated its centennial with a parade and picnic that included floats depicting History buffs old and new as well as reenacting some key events from 1912-1923 including the first automobile race in America over the Interurban Railway Bridge at Coconut Grove Park The downtown district was built on an original swampy tract of land that juts out into Biscayne Bay. To provide more space for businesses and homes, developers drained much of the bay by building reservoirs and yardsalong Biscayne Boulevard between Northwest Third Street and Northwest Eighth Street east of Southwest First Street to form what is now known as "The Promenade." In 1928 they annexed South Beach which made it official annexation date In 1933, Edgewater began buying property on Northwest First Street along Biscayne Boulevard to establish what would become today's University Park neighborhood In 1959 when Coral Gables/Miami Beach annexed Pinecrest/Eldon beach it finally merged with Edgewater creating one municipality On January 1st 2020 Edgewater celebrates its 100th anniversary with a parade to coincide with their centennial celebration
Edgewater was first settled by English colonists in the early 17th century. The area eventually became a part of the United States after the American Revolution. In 1836, it was incorporated as a town in Florida. It grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1900 it had over 10,000 residents. In 1962, Edgewater was merged with Jacksonville to form Jacksonville-Edgewater County.
