Edgewater is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the surface of a small bay formed by two branches of the St. Johns River and forms part of the city of Jacksonville. The first Europeans to visit Edgewater were Spanish traders in 1565 who named it "Cudahyde" after Cudahyde Island in Spain. The name may be derived from an early Indian word meaning "big house". A post office was established at Edgewater in 1872, and remained open until 1959. A naval base was constructed on nearby Fort Myers Beach during World War II, and remains active today as Naval Station Miami Beach. The population increased rapidly following World War II, reaching 3,000 by 1958. In 1970 Edgewater annexed land from Stonington to form what is now known as Jacksonville's inner-city suburbs; this annexation created new neighborhoods such as University Park and Cutler Hill which continue to maintain their own professional and cultural communities despite having close ties with Jacksonville proper. In 2001 Edgewater voted to become an all-City school district; this vote led to dramatic changes for the community including growth of businesses adjacent to schools (e.g., a hospital), more development near Interstate 95 (including a shopping mall), and more density near downtown streetside shops (e.g., Highlands Drive). Edgewater is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area and is located on State Road 706. The town was founded in 1902 by French Canadian immigrants as Edgewater Heights. They named it after an English gentleman who had come to Florida earlier that year. In 1907, the residents of Edgewater Heights incorporated as a town under the name of "Edgewater." The original city hall and jail were built there in 1907-08. The first post office opened in 1909. In 1932, during the Great Depression, Edgewater lost its status as a town because it did not have any local businesses to provide jobs for its citizens. However, over time it regained its former status as a small community with many small businesses providing services to its citizens. In 2000, Hurricane Donna destroyed the homes of most of the citizens of Edgewater Heights - including all but one resident who had lived there since before 1901 - leaving only about 100 people remaining within the boundaries of what would become Edgewater Township when it was created from portions of both Edgewater Heights and neighboring unincorporated areas in 2002. Most residents moved into new housing erected or funded by county government following Hurricane Donna's landfall on Sept 25th 2001 and throughout their rebuild process; however some remain within their original homes until they are sold or demolished due to lack thereof being available for occupancy again (e g., Curlwood Estates).
