During World War II, many men from Edgewater served in the military or were drafted into service here because it was one of few towns in Florida where hecould get good labor for his production plants run by Ford Motor Company . As a result, many African Americans migrated to Edgewater to work on plantations or as laborers. The first school in Edgewater opened in 1838. In 1861, the town became Jacksonville's first white city when it was incorporated as a separate municipality. By 1870, Edgewater had a population of over 1,000 people and its own water system. In 1892, Mayor James Hickey built the first public library in Jacksonville.
