In 1907, Mail Order Warehouse Company (MOWC) started business in Edgewater and soon began to grow into one of the largest parcel delivery services in Florida. In 1959, MOWC moved its operations to their current location on West Street and employed over 350 workers at that time. In 1978, Coca-Cola began production at their new plant east of town on Highway 7 near present-day State Road 724A. Coke quickly became an important part of Edgewater's economy with its production continuing until 2000 when it closed down due to environmental concerns around nearby Lake Okeechobee water storage tanks. As a result of this closure, many jobs went away for local residents which has had some negative effects on the community today; especially since Coca-Cola has been a major player in the local economy for more than 100 years! Today there are few businesses left within sight of either Lake Okeechobee or Uptown shopping centers which have hurt our overall community spirit and reputation among other towns within Monroe County; most notably Walt Disney World Resort just outside of town limits!
Edgewater was founded in 1851 by Hernando DeSoto and his party of Spanish conquistadors. The town was named for the English navigator, Edward Edgewater. In 1870, the name was changed to Jacksonville after Jacksonville, Florida became a United States Territory. The city's population increased rapidly during the 20th century due to its location on Major League Baseball's St. Petersburg-Clearwater rail line and its numerous jobs in shipbuilding and other industries. However, World War II led to an economic decline as the city lost its key manufacturing base. Today, Edgewater is a small community with few residents over the age of 50 and little commercial activity outside of local grocery stores andizza joints.
