The U.S. navy has been the backbone of America's maritime forces for centuries, and their gift history in Edgewater, Florida is reflective of that fact. The city was founded on May 29, 1837 by Commodore James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Blanchard Polk as Naval Station Fernandina Beach, after they purchased 5 acres of land from the Seminole Tribe of Florida. In 1851, the navy station moved to its present location at Fort Myers Beach and remained there until it was decommissioned in 1945. The navy's presence in Edgewater continued through World War II when Fernandina Beach became a military base for troops stationed in the area during the war years. From here, American troops participated in various operations around the world including Operation Overlord which led to Nazi Germany's defeat at Normandy beaches; Operation Neptune's Spear which targeted Japanese forces occupying Borneo; and Battle of Saipan where American forces fought against Imperial Japan. In 1946, Fernandina Beach was turned over to the city government and kept as a municipal park until it was sold to a group of investors who reopened it as an airport in 1959. This saw Navy personnel provided with housing on-base while they awaited their turn for retirement or promotion within the military ranks; this tradition continues today as Air Force personnel are also housed on-base while their careers are planned out (although this is no longer done concurrently with naval service). Edgewater has since seen growth as both a municipality and business center – most notably due to its status as home to America's first theme park (SeaWorld) and its inclusion into the Miami metropolitan area; both have helped contribute significantly to Edgewater's economy over time. The city has also become known for its annual "Navy Day" celebration which features arts and crafts displays from local businesses along with live music from local bands throughout downtown streetsides throughout late July/early August each year!

Edgewater is a town in Florida, United States. The population was 4,868 at the 2010 census. Edgewater is part of the Miami-Dade County Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is named after Admiral John A. Edmondson, who was Commandant of Marines in World War I and later Adjutant General for Marine Forces in the American Civil War. The town began as a small settlement on the edge of what is now Overtown on May 1, 1892 by John A. Edmondson and his wife Julia Crouse Edmondson with their children Hiram Augustus (1893-1981), Evelyn (1901-1964), Alice Lillian (1903-1985), and Clifford Franklin (1905-1991). They named their new community "Edgewater" after Commodore John A. Edmondson who had been Commander of Marines during World War I and later Adjutant General for Marine Forces in the American Civil War. The first store opened in 1893 and became one of the most successful businesses in town with many customers coming from nearby PortMiami or Miami Beach . The early years were difficult but full of promise as this new community developed into an important center for business and social life within Miami Dade County when it came to education, culture, politics, healthcare and more. In 1925 Mayor James J. McDonnell appointed Enoch Pratt Wiley as its first postmaster which led to growth in mail delivery services to other communities within Miami Dade County through what would become known as "the Wiley Delivery". By 1930 there were over 100 mail carrier businesses serving Edgewater with over 2 million pieces written each year! This growth continued until 1971 when Hurricane Agnes destroyed much of downtownMiami – including Fort Myers – leaving only edgy buildings standing while all other businesses were looted or destroyed outright including Wiley's Stores which still stands today unrecognized outside her original home located at NW 6th Avenue And NW 92nd Street

Edgewater is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Edgewater was founded by Captain John Stonington in 1851 as a small fishing village on the eastern edge of what is now Jacksonville. In 1902, the town name was changed to honor Admiral George Dewey after his victory over Spanish fleets at Santiago de Cuba. Edgewater's economy has been based primarily on agriculture and fishing since its founding. In recent years, however, it has become an important community for healthcare and education services. The city annexed portions of nearby Friendship Place in 2000 and relocated its public library to that location; the edifice still stands today as one of Jacksonville's most unique landmarks. In 1898, Edgewater developed into a sleepy but successful commercial center with a variety of retail businesses including two banks and four grocery stores along Withlacoochee Riverfront Avenue (now Sunrise Boulevard). By 1930, however, heavy industry had taken hold with factories such as Shell Oil Company manufacturing radios and other electrical equipment for military use during World War II; this led to significant unemployment among locals who could no longer find work in their markets or industries. The post-war boom brought about increased development throughout Edgewater due to new construction jobs in related fields such as engineering and transportation; however, many residents still struggled to make ends meet even though their neighborhoods saw dramatic rises in property values throughout the decade. By the late 1990s there were only a few remaining independent businesses left within downtown Edgewater while much of the surrounding area had been taken over by high-rise buildings housing healthcare facilities (such as Advocate Health Systems) or larger office complexes (such as JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s headquarters).
In 1892, the first railroad to reach Edgewater was the Jacksonville and Tampa Railroad. The line came through town and connected with the St. Petersburg Railroad at Clearwater. In 1893, a water pipeline was built from nearby Anclotect Creek to connect with the Tampa Bay Canal. This made it possible for people in Edgewater to get their goods and services easily from Tampa Bay. The first store in Edgewater was The Blacksmith Shop, which operated from 1892-1911. After that, there were several small businesses before the opening of The Cove in 1922 became what is now known as the heart of Edgewater business district. That year, also saw the start of Canaveral Naval Shipyard which would later become one of Florida's largest employers. Edgewater's heyday began after World War II when its many businesses boomed due to postwar demand for military supplies and workers by both local military forces and federal contractors like Lockheed Martin and Boeing plant jobs here. However, during most of the 1970s through 1990s, economic decline dogged Edgewater as population growth outpaced job growth throughout much of central Broward County while income inequality widened significantly among suburbanites living near Orlando instead of downtown residents who had supported early development hereabouts
