In 1905, the first police officer was hired in Edgewater and it served as its own municipality until 1912 when it became part of Palm Beach County. The first female officer was hired in 1949 and today there are six female officers on duty with the Edgewater Police Department. The town was founded in 1892 by John and Jennie Dean as a trading post on the St. Johns River near what is now called Edgewater Boulevard. In 1904, theDean family donated land to create a community that would include a shopping area, public square, churches and homes for local farmers and ranchers who raised cattle and sheep. In 1933-1934, Edgewater underwent an extensive renovation which included new streets, sidewalks and public buildings such as a courthouse and schoolhouse. The renovation project cost $5 million dollars ($ when measured against current values). After nearly fifty years of growth, Edgewater became one of Florida's newest communities when it incorporated as a town on June 14th of that year. Since its incorporation into the municipality there have been many major changes to both the demographics and character of Edgewater; most notably in recent years has been an increase in development around Lake Okeechobee - with much of this activity taking place along Interstate 75 (I-75B) which bisects the town center from south to north while also providing access to other parts of Pasco County through various interchange ramps just east of I-75A/E. This has led to some challenges for residents who must navigate I-75B during their everyday lives but has also resulted in increased commercial activity opportunities for locals businesses including several restaurants, two banks (one Federal Savings Bank & One First National Bank), four Publix Super stores (four anchor tenants), three fitness studios (two big anchors), two garage sales each month as well as numerous "off"ices", such as one law firm (!), one optometrist (!), one real estate agent (!), one homebuilder (!). !colspan=9 style="background:#FFFFFF;"|Established Towns
