Edgewater is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The town was founded by James and Fannie Edgewater in 1907 as a citrus orchard and agricultural community on the banks of Clearwater River. By 1912, it had become an incorporated village with a post office and two churches. A natural gas pipeline brought oil to Edgewater in 1914; the first commercial refinery ever built in Hillsborough County sat on the edge of town until 1978 when it closed because of pollution concerns. In 1925, James' grandson Harold purchased what is now known as "Old West" from developer William Waddell for $1 million. One side of Old West became home to dozens of dwellings called "Hills", while another became known as "Edgewater Heights". After years of development work and many name changes, Edgewater's original downtown district was fully developed in 1957 when residents voted to rename it after their hometowns – Tampa (James), St Petersburg (Fannie), Clearwater (Harold) – with corporate headquarters located at 601 E 3rd Street in downtown Edgewater. Although no longer an independent municipality, Edgewater falls within Hillsborough County government boundaries and has its own school system, courthouse/judicial branch and several convenience stores/gas stations including ExxonMobil station on Edgebrook Boulevard which opened in 1984. Edgewater was founded in 1892 by W.L. and A.G. Edwards as a citrus fruit packing and shipping center on the site of present-day Miracle Mile shopping area, directly east of downtown Miami. The town quickly grew to become an important commercial and social center for Miami residents and tourists alike. By 1933, Edgewater had acquired its own post office, radio station (WKMG), movie theater, bowling alley, ice cream parlor, grocery store, and several other businesses. In the years since then, Edgewater has undergone many changes both physical and economic - but its proud history remains unchanged. Today's Edgewater is a vibrant community rich in cultural diversity and history; home to some of Miami's most popular attractions including the Miracle Mile shopping district, the Singer factory complex, and Key Biscayne Beach Clubhouse – all located within walking distance of one another!
