In 1907 they moved to their present site which they purchased from the government for $1,000. The community grew rapidly during World War II as many people came to work on naval installations in Miami or served in the military. In 1951, Edgewater became an official incorporated municipality with its own government and police department. In the early 21st century, Edgewater experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy reach of downtown Miami and its access to both Interstate 95 and I-95E. The advent ofletal Zika virus caused a decline in tourism during 2016-17; however this has since reversed as more families have come back to visit since September 2017 when travel restrictions were put into place following the outbreak of that virus in Puerto Rico . Today, Edgewater is home to over 100 businesses including banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo), law firms (Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz LLP), health care facilities (Aurora Health Partners Inc.), restaurants (Pizza hut) and retailers (Zara). A new shopping center called Bayfront Park was opened adjacent to Bayfront Park Beach Playground on October 5th 2018 by Mayor Carlos Gimenez with funding provided by philanthropist Ron Burkle

Edgewater was founded in 1881 by J.F. Condon and his brother-in-law, William Prentice. The first store was a small hand-operated general store on the corner of State Road 7 and US 98. In 1886, the Condon family bought a tract of land east of present day Edgewater from the Hernando DeSoto Expedition for $2,000. The next year, they built a log cabin on their new property and named it "Edgewater". They operated the store until 1907 when they sold it to A.C. Bigham who renamed it "Bigham's". In 1912, Mr. Bigham sold the business to Wm. Ransom who kept it until 1916 when he sold it to Harry Laughlin who operated it until 1920 when he sold it to Jno. Aidenitch who operated it until 1931 when he lost interest and It became an open air market known as "The Park Place Markets", which still exists today as "The Edgewater Market"
