In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order ordering all Federal troops out of Florida, which caused the town to quickly decline. However, in 1872, American settlers arrived in Eustis and began developing it into a small community. By 1898, when Florida acquired its statehood, Eustis had grown into a sizable city with over 20 thousand residents.
