The Coast Guard gift history in Eustis, Florida began with the creation of the Coast Guard by Congress on 3 November 1915. The Coast Guard was first organized as a feeder service to the United States Navy under the command of Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren. On 15 October 1917, Congress passed an act that created the Office of Naval Support and it was then decided to create a separate corps for coast guard protection within the Navy. The following year, Rear Admiral Harry S. Haldeman became Commandant of the Coast Guard Academy and directed its construction at Annapolis, Maryland. In 1933, Rear Admiral James Pelly became Commandant and director of Administration and also directed its construction at Norfolk, Virginia As time progressed, it was decided that a more permanent place for Coast Guard officers would be established on land rather than in shipyards or barracks so new areas could be developed such as Eustis where many people had connections to the coast guard or were employed by agencies that depended on it including insurance companies which donated land near Eustis for use as a military airfield during World War II
Eustis is a city in the Miami-Dade County, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 64,246. Eustis is located on the shores of the Miami River and its downtown area is home to several high-end hotels and shopping centers. The city also has a large aerospace industry with locations throughout South Florida. The first Europeans to visit what is now Eustis were Spanish explorers who passed through in 1565–1566 while looking for an entrance into Cuba. A French fur trader named Pierre Le Morin traveled through Eustis in 1627 and Callender visited it in 1629 as part of his exploration of South Florida. In 1795, American Revolutionary War veteran General James K. Polk decided to make Eustis his winter headquarters because he felt that if Mobile Bay fell then Tampa would be vulnerable and richly protected by Spain; consequently, he founded Palm Beach County on November 6, 1819 from land that was ceded by Spain to America under the terms of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. Eustis is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1837 by George Eustis and his wife Rachel. The community was named for Captain James Eustis, one of the two brothers who helped build Fort Butler on the Gulf Coast during the Seminole Wars. In 1851, Captain Eustis donated land to the town for a school and church. After serving as its first mayor from 1862-1864, Captian Eustis served as the first state senator from Florida from 1865-1867. He died in office on December 12, 1867. The town had a population of 792 in 1920 and peaked at 1,146 in 1940; however, it has since decreased to 602 residents today. The first post office opened in Eustis on November 25th of that year; it operated under the name of Harmonville until 1914 when it changed its name to Eustis. During World War II, according to official records, over 125 local businesses supplied materials or services to American forces stationed throughout North Africa and Europe; many of these businesses were destroyed during bombings raids conducted by Allied forces during that conflict. The original post office building still stands today (now used as a library) and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Eustis also played an important role during Hurricane Andrew's landfalling on August 24th 1992; over 350 homes were damaged or destroyed within minutes after landfall while more than 2 dozen people were killed along with scores of other injuries sustained as a result of Andrew's winds and storm surge flooding. Even though much damage was caused byAndrew's numerous floods and winds combined not only did no one receive government assistance following Andrew but also many reconstruction efforts have yet to bear fruit due largely to budgetary limitations created by recessions brought about by global economic troubles which have continued into this decade In recent years there has been an effort made towards developing new industries within the city limits such as agriculture or tourism although someResidents remain hesitant about these changes given past experiences
Eustis, Florida was founded on December 12, 1876 by Egbert Eustis and James H. Grant. The community was located on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles southwest of Jacksonville. The town's first post office opened in 1879. In 1902, Eustis became a county seat and enjoyed rapid growth throughout the 20th century due to its position as an agricultural center and its status as a bedroom community for Jacksonville. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, Eustis experienced significant decline in population and development due to various factors including a lack of jobs in the area after deregulation of agriculture in early 1990s; increasing competition from nearby Jacksonville for housing; and successive hurricanes that devastated much of Florida during those years. The last resident to live in Eustis died on October 15, 2009.
