Eustis, Florida is a city in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Eustis was founded by Europeans in the early 1800s and became part of the Seminole Nation. In 1835, it was annexed by Jacksonville and incorporated as a city. The first post office in Eustis opened on February 14, 1836; it closed on January 6, 1865. The first mayor of Eustis was James Purdy. On May 3, 1907, a tornado touched down within town limits and killed four people and injured seventy-six others; this event is generally recognized as the deadliest tornado to affect Florida since records began being kept more than one hundred years ago. It was also the most powerful tornado to hit American soil until Hurricane Irma made landfall in September 2017. In 1925, the Miami–Ft Lauderdale Electric Railway (MFE) built an line from downtown Miami to Eustis via downtown Jacksonville; this line is now known as Amtrak's "Florida Line". At that time there were no public transportation options available within town limits other than walking or riding horseback around unmaintained roadsides which were difficult to navigate during heavy rains or wildfires season. MFE constructed what is now called "the loop" which allowed easy access into town for passengers without having to go through downtown Jacksonville or take streetcar lines back out again
