The first national guard unit was organized on December 12, 1861, when President Abraham Lincoln called for a volunteer army to help protect the Union during the Civil War. The Florida National Guard was created on May 15, 1898, as part of a larger effort to organize all state militias into a national force. The Florida National Guard is one of the oldest and largest military forces in the United States. It currently has over 26,000 member troops across 43 states and Puerto Rico. Eustis is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community of Eustis began as a small farming village on the east coast of Stuart Island in 1892. The name derived from an Indian word meaning "to store goods." In 1907, land was sold for development and by 1912, the village had developed into a small town with a population of about 150 people. The first post office opened in 1915. A general store and two businesses operated until 1926 when they were replaced by what is now the Eustis Chamber of Commerce building and Post Office Museum. In 1940, construction began on Eustis's first high school which became known as East High School after it was built on land gifted to the town by Dr. Julius Eastman Sr., founder of Eastman Kodak Company. On November 6, 1951, Eustis attained Municipal Authority status making it an incorporated municipality under state law rather than just a unincorporated community surrounded by ruralDuval County propertyholds. In 1959, work began to build Interstate 95 through Duval County and portions of north Miami-Dade County; this prompted many residents to leave their homes for fear that they would be displaced if I-95 were built through their townships or communities (eastern Duval County being especially affected). However, due to fundraising efforts spearheaded by local citizens and donations from automobile manufacturers such as Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation lobbyists working with then Governor Lawton Chiles (R), I-95 was eventually routed through Eustis without affecting its residents or businesses; thereby preserving most if not all its historical associations with the community . Eustis is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Eustis Bayou, about 30 miles south of Jacksonville and 3 miles north of Eustis proper. The first Europeans to visit this area were the Spanish in 1513. They named it La Isla de la Conchita (the Island of the Conchita). A more recent name for Eustis was "Hernando de Soto's Town." In 1824, General Manuel Diaz divided Florida into two sections - one including Eustis and that part east of the bayou known as Gainesville - called Alachua County. This would be the nucleus for much later political subdivisions in Florida. In 1887, a store opened in what is now downtown Eustis and soon became a popular tourist spot due its secluded location on an estuary with beautiful beaches and soundless waters. The store prospered until 1907 when fire destroyed most of it; however, souvenirs from that time still survive today at various locations around town such as Main Street and US-1A between I-595 and US-41W just northwest of downtown. At some point during World War II local residents formed an American Legion post to provide security against Japanese aggression which resulted in increased tourism opportunities for locals during that time period especially because there was no military presence in or near town during wartime operations. As businesses flourished they attracted out-of-town developers who turned their backs on town values by building high rises overlooking Interstate 95/US 41W while paying no taxes to either county or city limits; this ultimately led to declining business values overall over time culminating in abandonment of storefronts beginning around 2000 according to many sources although others claim prewar development patterns may have continued even if commercial properties were abandoned because tax assessments reflect only depopulated areas rather than continuously occupied ones!
