Eustis, Florida is located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. The population was 56,521 at the 2010 census. Eustis is a small town located on the east coast of the state and has been called "The Venice of the Gulf". The name comes from its location on US 1 between Biscayne Bay and Homestead Air Force Base. In 1984, then-Governor Don Edwards announced his plan to move State University of Florida (SUF) from Gainesville to Tallahassee because Gainesville was becoming too big for SUF's student body and infrastructure; Edwards said he wanted UF students "to have more opportunities for economic development." SUF refused to budge until Edwards agreed not only to close some state universities but also give up almost 20 percent of their budgets for research projects related to those universities; this deal ultimately led to the collapse of Edwards' administration less than two years later. In 1990, then-Governor Lawton Chiles announced that he would award a package of $105 million dollars over five years for community development initiatives in rural areas throughout southcentral Florida; these projects would be known as "The Next Great American Community".
