Eustis, Florida is a small town in the Panhandle of Gulf Coast America. The name comes from the original Spanish explorers who named it San Pablo de Eustis, meaning "Saint Peter's Bay" after landing on its shores in 1559. The town was founded by members of the Captain John Stennis expedition who explored what is now Pensacola Bay in 1819. In 1903, Eustis became an incorporated city and has since grown to become a significant tourist destination with a wide variety of attractions and businesses. The area that makes up today's Eustis was first settled by Native American people in the late 17th century. A fort was built at present-day Eustis in 1775 during the British colonial period as part of their effort to control Pensacola Bay. After Spain took over Florida from Britain in 1813, they developed this area into a major shipping center for sugarcane exports and development began around this time. By 1830, however, only about 200 people lived here permanently because much of Pensacola had been destroyed by hurricanes such as Maria in September 2017 which left over 150 dead and thousands homeless. In 1903, Captain John Stennis set out on his famous circumnavigation of the world aboard HMS Discovery when he discovered Pensacola Bay and decided to establish a permanent settlement there. He arrived on October 26th gave thanks for God's protection from hurricanes while also establishing Fort Stennis as his headquarters. Over time, many other vessels stopped at Fort Stennis including HMS Beagle (1839), USS Enterprise (1846), USS Constitution (1857) and USS Perry (1868). With advances in transportation technology and increasing demand for sugarcane imports from abroad, growth slowed throughout World War II but recommenced after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 making Cuba an available site for military production purposes beyond US Naval jurisdiction! Between 1943-1945, more than 60 buildings were constructed withinFort Stennes boundaries - many serving as storage or ammunition areas for Navy ships engaged in Naval operations off South Florida! Following World War II there was continued growth due to new waves of immigrants arriving from all over Asia seeking jobs and opportunity; however housing shortages persisted until shopping malls started popping up all across southcentral Florida beginning around 1970! In 1990s/2000s another wave of immigration began bringing families fleeing gang violence in Mexico; however crime rates have continued to increase locally relative to national averages despite numerous attempts by law enforcement officials to reduce crime rates since 2000 Eustis is located between Tallahassee County downriver towards Tampa Bay onristica Hwy., restaurant district east side includes Saugus Rd., just outside city limits
