The Air Force has a long and rich history in Fernandina Beach, Florida. The city was named after General James K. Polk, the first U.S. President to be impeached, in 1849. The military installation that now occupies downtown Fernandina Beach was founded on November 3, 1942 by Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Riddle as an airfield for the Air Forces of Canada. It functioned as a training ground for pilots from all over North America until it closed its doors in 1957. In 1959, the Air Force activated Headquarters Allied Forces Europe (HAFE) at this location and moved it to Belgium where it remained until 1991 when it relocated back to Florida under Operation Neptune’s Spear II which led to the fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. After his ouster, headquarters returned to Belgium and continues to reside there today while Headquarters United States European Command (HUUSEC) is located at nearby Ramstein AFB Germany which provides command and control for NATO forces across western European airspace including operations in Libya and Mali.
