The Fernandina Beach Coast Guard had its origins in the early 1900s when a small committee was formed to provide security and defense on the Inlet. The first Coast Guard ship was built in 1903, and it served until 1922. The first permanent coast guard station was established at Fernandina Beach in 1915. At that time, it was the only Coast Guard station on Florida’s Gulf coast. By 1930, there were six coast guard stations located throughout Florida. In 1939, the existing vessels of the Coast Guard were augmented by two new ships, Lighthouse Point and Miami Harbor. These new vessels provided more security for both communities along Florida’s Gulf coast and helped to improve maritime safety while enforcing traffic regulations. In 1962, a third vessel, Ponce de Leon was added to the Coast Guard fleet as part of an effort to improve maritime patrol activity along Florida’s Atlantic coastline. Since its inception, the Fernandina Beach Coast Guard has played a vital role in safeguarding our state’s waterways and coasts. Today, we continue to offer support to our community through law enforcement operations as well as emergency response services such as Search and Rescue missions when needed most. Fernandina Beach is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,052 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Daytona Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fernandina Beach is located on the mouth of the Indian River and bordered by Orange County to the north, Seminole County to the east, and Flagler County to the south. The area that now makes up Fernandina Beach was originally settled by Native Americans inhistoric times. In 1699, an Englishman named John Smith discovered a rich tract of land at what is now Fernandina Beach. He named it "Island Key" because it lay between two points on Jacksonville Harbor called "Inlet Key." A year later, England granted this land to Spain for $10 per acre. Spain built a fort at what is now known as Fort Myers on "Inlet Key." During World War II, Fernandina Beach became an important naval base due to its location near Tampa Bay and its access to water supplies necessary for warfare against Japan. The USS Enterprise (CVN 65) was stationed here during World War II before being sent back home after being torpedoed off Japanese coast in 1944; she became a museum ship in 1988 and moored outside of Naval Station Pensacola until 1994 when her restoration began under Captain James E Jones Jr., USNR (Ret.). Fernandina Beach's economy changed dramatically when air travel became available from nearby Orlando International Airport starting in 1967. Aviation has continued to be an important factor in Broward County's economy ever since with many businesses based out of or related to Sanford International Airport including JetBlue Airways Corp., American Airlines Inc., Delta Air Lines Co., Southwest Airlines Co., Hawaiian Airlines808 LLC and United Parcel Service Incorporated among others In 2000, local officials recommended that Fernandina beach rename itself "Orlando Beaches" due partly to concerns about how crowded and noisy downtown Orlando had becomerelatively speaking compared with some of America's most beautiful coastal towns such as Sarasota/Bradenton/Tampa etc...The name change went into effect on October 1st 2001 following much public support from people living near or adjacentto the beach who desired more accurate naming which helped preservation efforts underway at boththe beach & city limits! Today there are numerous restaurants accredited with AA ratings including: Bluejacket’s Seafood restaurant(Gulfport), Captiva Grille(Fort Myers), Wilder’s Bamboo BBQ(Orlando) Red Lobster seafood restaurant(Fort Myers), Ocean Reef Grill & salad bar(Pensacola) among others! One gift that has had a lasting impact on the Coast Guard was a set of regulation books called "Anchor Line Regulations." This gift was given to the Coast Guard by Admiral John A. Roebuck in 1962. Admiral Roebuck served as Commandant of the United States Marine Corps at the time and was responsible for developing Anchor Line Regulations. The book became an important reference guide for members of the Coast Guard and continues to be used today. Another legacy from this time period was a set of binoculars known as "The Golden Fleece." These binoculars were donated to the Coast Guard by mining company executive Donald Haggerty in 1965. Mr. Haggerty saw an opportunity to help improve maritime security and donated these binoculars with his own money- something that has continued to be appreciated by members of the Coast Guard ever since! Fernandina Beach is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1892 by Scots-Irish immigrants and is now part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The name Fernandina comes from the Spanish word "fernando" meaning "thorny tree." The beach was once a popular spot for bathing and sunbathing; however, today it is more known for its casinos and nightlife than its natural resources. The first settlers to Fernandina Beach were Irish immigrants who came overland in their carts or wagons. They arrived in 1892 and soon started to build homes on the beach. By 1920, there were already 350 people living in Fernandina Beach. Most of them were farmers or fishermen who traded goods with Spain and Mexico. In 1922, the United States bought what are now Refugio Key (then called Rockledge) from Spain for $10,000 dollars. This acquisition made Fernandina Beach an American community under US jurisdiction. As part of this deal, Americans also obtained title to all of the sandbars that make up the coastline between Refugio Key and Fernandina Beach. Most of these early residents left after World War II because of wartime shortages of food and housing opportunities in North America. However, some remained until the late 1970s when mosteveryone else had either moved away or died off due to various illnesses such as cancer or a flu pandemic that swept through Florida during those years (the last major waves arrivals being around 1984). Today's population is just over 400 residents which includes many retirees from nearby Orlando who often visit during business hours only to find that there are no casinos open! The main attraction still remains the beautiful beaches along both Refugio Key and Fernandina Beaches - perfect if you're looking to take a break from city life!
