Coffee was first introduced to this area by Spanish missionaries, who Nursery rhyme: "Hernando de Soto and his men brought coffee from Mexico." The first coffee shop in Fernandina Beach was opened in 1875 by J.B. Roecker and his brother-in-law, August Wilhelm Zimmermann. In 1912, a new coffee house called The Hague opened on US Highway 301 near the present day intersection of First Avenue and Gulf Boulevard. The popularity of coffee spread throughout the 1920s as more businesses began popping up in the area for people to stop at for refreshments on their way to work or play. By 1941, there were over 20 cafes located in Fernandina Beach alone! In 1966, The Jacksonville Herald published an article about a group of businessmen who had started importing Italian espresso beans from Rome and selling them beneath the name "Jaxco". Soon afterwards, other stores followed suit and soon Fernandina Beach became home to one of Florida's favorite cup shops! One of the most famous owners of Jaxco Coffee was Don Pappalardo who ran it from 1984 until his death in 2003. He is credited with helping popularize espresso drinks throughout North America and even being named European Brewer of the Year in 1999! After Don's death, his son Tim took over ownership but struggled with financial difficulties; he sold it to Andrews Coffee Co., Ltd., a company based out of London which continued operations until 2001. From then on until 2006 when they closed down due to lack of business, Fernandina Beach's only remaining café was known as Dutch Bros.' Place! It reopened under new ownership in Fall 2006 as simply "Dutch Bros." However, after only two months it closed again due to low sales - this time permanently! This story doesn't end there though; another café called Monk's Coffee opened up next door (which still exists today) but quickly went out of business as well (possibly because no one wanted Colombian coffee). Finally we have what is currently known as "Dutch Bros.' Place" which opened its doors for all eternity back in Fall 2006 (maybe because that's how long it has been around?).
