Fernandina Beach is a small town located in Palm Coast, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by J.C. Dempsey and his wife, Fannie. The name Fernandina means “Island of the Goddess” in Spanish and it is also the name of one of the towns in Lake County, Illinois. The original settlers were Irish immigrants who arrived on horseback from County Clare. They built their first cabin on what is now known as State Road 2 just north of the present day beach house. In 1893, they bought an island offhand from a man who had lost his boat when he tried to cross Lake Miami at that location. The Key West-based company Wachtel Brothers donated land to establish Fernandina Beach which became a town under the jurisdiction of Palm Coast Township trustees on July 1, 1894 with J.C., Cilla Dempsey as its first mayor and postmaster general. The early years of Fernandina Beach were difficult because there was no water available for anyone to farm or build homes on due to all the rain that fell during those years! However, through hard work and determination, many people were able to make this small town thrive over the years including: Mrs.(later Mrs.)Jill Dempsey (wife of J.C.), Mr.(later Mr.) John Dempsey (husband of Cilla), Joe Rosenthal (photographer), Lenny Bruce (comedian), Ernie Kovacs ( entertainer ), Dora Mitford (writer/director) and many more! On October 5th, 1976 – exactly 100 years ago – Fannie Dempsey died suddenly after a long battle with cancer and left behind an amazing legacy including: 1) A preserved section of Islet Key where she used to live; 2) A golf course built specifically for her daughter’s wedding in 1984; 3) An archive filled with family photos dating back centuries; 4) A museum dedicated exclusively to her granddaughter Irma who tragically passed away in 2014; 5) A celebration every year honoring her memory called “A Celebration of Life” What has made Fernandina Beach so unique over these past century are not only its residents but also its businesses which have helped contribute significantly to our community’s growth!
