Fernandina Beach was founded in 1868 by Captain John F. Smith and his wife, Fernandina. The first post office at Fernandina Beach was established in 1870. In 1876, the town of Fernandina was platted and it became a city in 1903. The population of Fernandina Beach peaked at over 200,000 in 1920 but declined to around 100,000 by 1930. By the early 1940s, Fernandina Beach had shrunk to its current size and struggling economy. However, during World War II the city saw an influx of evacuees as part of the Allied bombing campaign against Germany. This led to a resurgence in the town's economy and population throughout the war years; however, by 1945 Fernandina Beach had fallen back to its pre-war levels again. There has been little progress made since then towards revitalization within the community; however, there are efforts underway to revive some aspects of its history such as hosting annual festivals or hosting summer concerts/festivals on various occasions throughout the year
