The Florida National Guard has a rich history in Fernandina Beach. The first national guard unit was organized on December 15, 1907, and served as an armory detachment for the local police department. On January 1, 1912, the first battalion of the Florida National Guard was created from elements of the locally-raised Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In 1917, Fernandina Beach became a state capital and the fortifications were updated to include a military garrison and training ground for troops from all over Florida. In 1928, Fernandina Beach was designated as the permanent home of the Florida National Guard’s Headquarters and it continued to serve that purpose until 1972 when it relocated to Tallahassee. Since then, Headquarters staff have resided at various locations within the city of Fernandina Beach before returning permanently to Headquarters Building in 2012. Today, there are more than 4500 active duty members of the Florida National Guard who provide support throughout our state. The Fort Walton Beach Garrison is responsible for providing security for many community events including hurricane preparedness drills and parades; providing medical care during disasters such as floods or hurricanes; conducting law enforcement operations; guarding state institutions;and more In commemoration of its past services and current commitment to readiness statewide, each year on November 3rd - in keeping with Flag Day -the Fort Walton Beach Garrison celebrates America's Birthday by hosting an event called "National Guard Patriot" which features patriotic performances by local bands and individuals from across our beautiful county . Fernandina Beach is a town in Florida, United States. The population was 6,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of Palm Beach County. Fernandina Beach is on the west coast of Lake Okeechobee and bordered by Boynton Beach to the south, West Palm Beach to the north, and Aventura to the east. The first Europeans to visit Fernandina beach were Spanish explorers who mapped it from 1524-1527. In 1821 Englishman George Smith sailed up Lake Okeechobee and named it "Fernandina" after Princess Fortunato's sister in Spain. In 1892 Captain John Harkness named it after his niece, Princess Fernandina of Naples. In 1907 developers built a casino on what is now State Road A1A which led to its name change from "Fernanda" to "Fernandina". The town became an incorporated municipality in 1959 with a land area of . Its current boundaries are based on that year's census results: State Road A1A runs from downtown through present day Fernandina Heights south until US 1 meets Interstate 95 (the original route) just north of mile marker 327; State Road B2B runs from US 1 northeast through central Fernandina Heights past Atlantic Avenue eastward until SR A1A meets I-95 near mile marker 337; and SR A1A continues northwest as CR 906 into unincorporated Broward County
