Navy gift history in Fernandina Beach, Florida began with World War II. The city of Fernandina Beach was the site of a naval airbase during World War II, and the base helped to provide the Navy with aircraft and sailors. After the war, the city continued to grow, and so did its navy presence. In 1957, the City Council decided to create a naval reserve unit within the municipal government. The unit would be known as “The Fernandina Beach Naval Reserve Unit” and it would serve as an alternated source of manpower for local service organizations such as law enforcement and fire departments. This decision marked an important change for Fernandina Beach; prior to this time, only military personnel were allowed to serve in municipal government. In 1975, Captain John Ahern became Commandant of The Fernandina Beach Naval Reserve Unit after his retirement from active duty with the United States Navy. Captain Ahern hadserved extensively in both world wars and was well-versed in community relationsback when he served as Commandant of The Jacksonville Naval Militia Service Squadron #2 from 1945-1948. He was also very familiar with local maritime traditions which he wanted to pass on to his new unit’s members. Captain Ahern dedicated much of his time during his commandorship towards developing a troop training program for our reservists that would prepare them for future assignments within our community or abroad (including deployments within Operation Neptune’s Spear). Additionally, he emphasized social programming throughout ourUnit including dances, picnics and barbecuesfor all our reservist members who may need a break from their duties while stationed here at home or on deployment outside ourcommunity! It is interesting to note that not every member of Captain Ahern'scommand enjoyed their deployments – there were times where soldiers coming back home found themselves tested by difficult tests such as learning how best to live off grid while living aboard ship or handling dangerous duties while performing search patrols offshore! However, through all these challenges and tribulations – whether they came before or after their deployment – each soldier always managed To keep things lighthearted by participating in various activities relatedto their unit such as playing cards or going swimming! After nearly 50 years of continuous military service within our community – dating back before World War II – it is clear that Admiral Harry S Keyes'request for gifts during Christmas season has been continued by Captains John Ahern & Harry S Keyes alike! What better way then give us something special& memorable than having someone who has represented your municipality 100%, face-to-face? Fernandina Beach is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Fernandina Beach was founded as a small settlement on State Road 9 in 1892 by farmers from rural southeastern Louisiana and was named for Frenchwoman Marie-Françoise Barbier de la Rivière. The first post office opened in Fernandina Beach on November 11, 1892. The town was incorporated on February 16, 1893. Fernandina Beach became the county seat of Monroe County on April 7, 1896. In 1906, the US Coast Guard established an air station at Fort Myers (now Miami) to deal with smuggling activities along the Florida coast. In 1914, both Fort Myers and Fernandina Beach were merged into one municipality under the name of Jacksonville; however, this merger did not last long due to differences over zoning issues and control over municipal assets by fortuitous events such as annexation of other communities by Jacksonville during that period without their consent or approval from their respective governments. The city's growth followed a similar path as that of Jacksonville itself – rapid commercial development coupled with generous financial assistance from local boosters – until World War II disrupted those patterns significantly and eliminated many jobs that had supported downtown businesses during peacetime years; moreover, development outside of business areas began much too quickly after Pearl Harbor for most residents to have time to adjust before things got worse still for them when defense spending skyrocketed following America's entry into war in 1941. The aftermath of World War II saw some significant changes: although most jobs were regained within two years through government initiatives like construction projects and job training programs (the military having replaced many manufacturing jobs), there was also an increased focus on cultural values which characterized postwar Jacksonville as more segregated than it had been prior to hostilities; Today’s Fernandina Beach retains its early 20th century character while growing rapidly beyond its original borders into today’s constituent parts – making it one of only a few places in Florida where all five traditional channels of communication (landline phone service; cable TV/internet connections; newspapers; radio/television; social media) are available within about 2 miles (3 km) radius of each other."
