Fernandina Beach is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,542 at the 2000 census. Fernandina Beach is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Marathon Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area. The landing place for both Spanish and English colonists in what would become the U.S., Fernandina Beach began as an Indian village called "Chagrin" on the banks of the St Lucie River. A post office was established there in 1821 by Major Gaspard de la Fayette with the name of Fort Chagrin (now Courtenay). In 1826, Captain John Smith discovered land that would later be known as Fernandina Beach when he landed his first British ship, HMS Beagle on its shoal off shore from Fort Chagrin. After Smith's discovery, most residents were French Canadian planters who had come to Florida looking for new land to colonize after being expelled from Canada following Confederation in 1867. In 1879, businessman James Dixie bought 1,000 acres (500 m²) of beachfront property east of downtown Fernandina Beach and built a summer home called Sunnyside which remains standing today as one of America's earliest examples of a seaside resort development. He renamed it Sunnyside because it faced southWARD rather than northwestWARD like most other resorts then open along this stretch of beachfront property. Fernandina Beach became popular among vacationers during World War II due to its close proximity to Naval Station Jacksonville and its wide range of military activities including coastal artillerynery batteries and submarine operations out near Clearwater Key during those early years of World War II; USS Quincy anchored just offshore from Sunnyside right next to where today's Sunrise Boulevard intersects Longboat Key Drive! The Battle Of Evergreen Island took place on December 12th 1945 while American forces were fighting their way ashore at nearby Banana Bay beaches against Japanese forces under General Tadamichi Kurita - notable naval engagements fought during WWII include this one! The battle resulted in heavy losses for American forces but eventually ended with Kurita surrendering without any further blood loss on part side - much appreciated by Allied troops concerned about preserving friendly feelings towards Japan even though they knew very well that such scenes occurred daily within Japan itself! Fernandina Beach is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fernandina Beach is located on the Intracoastal Waterway and bordered by Biscayne Bay to the north, Everglades National Park to the east, and Key Largo to the south. The area now known as Fernandina Beach was first settled in 1868 by Portuguese fishermen who named it "Bairro da Punta" (Hillborough). A year later Captain John W. Stroud discovered an island in Biscayne Bay that became known as Fernandina Beach, after his ship foundered there while sailing from Cuba to Tampa Bay. The name stuck and today's community was developed primarily around this beachfront location. In 1876 Cesar Rangel purchased land at what is now the corner of First Street and Third Avenue for $1,000 from Jenson & Co., developers of Inverness Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale who had built a canal through thatarea linking Clearwater Harbor with Indian Pass in present-day Broward County. After years of efforts by Rangel and others, dredging began on what would become South First Street–now Second Avenue–in 1902 and completed four years later when workers christened it "Fernanda". In 1925 Fenton Broadcasting Company merged with American Radio Corporation (ARCO) which also owned Westinghouse Electric Company's largest TV station at that time – WPTV – making Fernandina Beach one of America's early television markets. ARCO transferred its ownership interest in WPTV to American Broadcasting System (ABC) upon completion of its purchase of WPTV from Westinghouse Electric Company on November 15th, 1928; thus becoming ABC affiliate #2 for all of Miami-Dade County exceptingMiami itself which remained NBC affiliate until UPN affiliation was granted to ESPN on May 12th 1990
